Why 442 Hz
Wind instruments rise in pitch as they warm up, so the starting point is set slightly high. Wind bands in Japan commonly use 442 Hz, and some European orchestras use 443 Hz. Match whatever your group uses.
When the chord sounds muddy
A chord can still sound muddy even when everyone has the needle centred. The equal-tempered major third sits 14 cents above the just one. In that case listen for beats instead of watching the needle. The ensemble screen counts how many beats per second you have.
